We had no choice, commando who killed 6 tells 'Post'
The 15th and last naval commando from Flotilla 13 (the Shayetet) to rappel down onto the ship from the helicopter, S. said on Thursday that he was immediately attacked by what the IDF has called “the mob of mercenaries” aboard the vessel, just like the soldiers who had boarded just before him.
Looking to his side, he saw three of his commanders lying wounded – one with a gunshot wound to the stomach and another with a gunshot wound to the knee. A third was lying unconscious; his skull was fractured by a devastating blow with a metal bar.
As the next in the chain of command, S., who has been in the Shayetet for three and a half years, immediately took charge.
He pushed the wounded soldiers up against the wall of the upper deck and created a perimeter of soldiers around them to begin treating their wounds, he said. He then arranged his men to form a second perimeter, and pulled out his 9 mm. Glock pistol to stave off the charging attackers and to protect his wounded comrades.
The attackers had already seized two pistols from the commandos, and fired repeatedly at them. Facing more than a dozen of the mercenaries, and convinced their lives were in danger, he and his colleagues opened fire, he said. S. singlehandedly killed six men. His colleagues killed another three.
On Thursday, S. sat down with The Jerusalem Post at the Shayetet’s base in northern Israel for an exclusive interview, during which he described the dramatic events aboard the Mavi Marmara on Monday; he is being considered for a medal of valor.
“When I hit the deck, I was immediately attacked by people with bats, metal pipes and axes,” S. told the Post. “These were without a doubt terrorists. I could see the murderous rage in their eyes and that they were coming to kill us.”
S. does not look like a hero. Well-built, like all commandos in the Shayetet, he is also soft-spoken and stingy with words, but his commander Lt.-Col. T. fills in the blanks.
“S. did a remarkable job,” T. said. “He stabilized the situation and succeeded in hitting six of the terrorists.”
Based on preliminary results of its investigation into the navy’s takeover of the Mavi Marmara, which ended with nine dead passengers and more than 30 wounded, the IDF said on Thursday that the commandos were attacked by a well-trained group of mercenaries, most of whom were found without IDs but with thousands of dollars in their pockets.
The group was well trained and was split into a number of squads of about 20 mercenaries each distributed throughout the upper deck, the IDF said. All of the mercenaries wore gas masks and ceramic bulletproof vests and were armed with either bats, slingshots, metal bars, knives or stun grenades.
The IDF’s understanding is that the mercenaries mainly chose dual-purpose items of this sort rather than guns, since opening fire would have made it blatantly clear that they were terrorists and not so-called peace activists.
Nevertheless, the IDF suspects that the group did have some guns of its own. Israeli forensic experts who examined the ship found casings belonging to a weapon that was not used by the commandos, and the Turkish captain of the ship later told the IDF that the “mercenaries” threw their weapons overboard after the commandos took control of the vessel.
T. said he realized the group they were facing was well-trained and likely ex-military after the commandos threw a number of stun grenades and fired warning shots before rappelling down onto the deck. “They didn’t even flinch,” he said. “Regular people would move.”
Each squad of the “mercenaries” was equipped with a Motorola communication device, the IDF said, so they could pass information to one another. Assessments in the defense establishment are that members of the group were affiliated with international global jihad elements and had undergone training in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan.
S. on Thursday downplayed his involvement in the operation. “I did what I was trained to do and now I move on,” he said.
In contrast to earlier reports, the commandos said that they began using their weapons within a minute and a half after boarding the ship, due to the extreme violence they faced. One of the reasons S. pulled out his gun right after landing on the ship was because one of the mercenaries was pointing a pistol, snatched from one of the commandos, at another commando’s head.
‘We face international hypocrisy’
He spoke both in Hebrew and then in English at a special press conference in his office, called to address the wave of harsh international criticism against the raid, in which nine people were killed.
“Once again Israel faces hypocrisy and a biased rush to judgment,” Netanyahu said.
In his conversations with international world leaders, Netanyahu said, he had asked them a basic question.
“What would you do? How would your soldiers behave in similar circumstances? In your heart, you all know the truth,” said Netanyahu.
“This might sound like an impossible plea, request or demand,” he continued, adding, “Israel should not be held to a double standard. The Jewish state has a right to defend itself like any other state.”
If ships were allowed to sail to Gaza without inspection as flotilla organizers have demanded, nothing could stop Iran from sending high-level weapons to Hamas in Gaza, said Netanyahu.
Already, he said, Hamas has missiles that can hit major Israeli cities such as Ashkelon, Beersheba and even Tel Aviv. Very soon, their missiles will also be able to reach the outskirts of Jerusalem.
“Israel can not permit Iran to develop a Mediterranean port a few dozen kilometers from Tel Aviv,” said Netanyahu. He added that missiles could also be launched from there toward Europe.
“The same countries that are criticizing us today should know that they will be targeted tomorrow,” he said.
Under international law, Israel had every right to intercept the ship, he said.
When it did so, he added, those on board viciously attacked the soldiers with knives and rods and in some cases they fired guns.
On the tape it is possible to hear them chanting “battle cries against the Jews,” said the prime minister. He said he regretted the loss of life, but that the soldiers had had a right to defend themselves and their country.
“This was not a love boat, this was a hate boat. These were not peace activists, there were supporters of terrorism,” he said.
Videotapes of the raid reflect these details, but for “many in the international community, no evidence is needed. Israel is guilty until it is proven guilty. Israel is told it has a right to defend itself, but it is condemned every time it exercises that right,” said Netanyahu.
Netanyahu did not address the calls by the international community for an independent investigation into the incident, but government sources have said that Israel has no intention of complying with that demand.“Israel won’t apologize for defending itself,” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Wednesday night, as he urged the international community to stop condemning the IDF for its Monday raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla.

President salutes soldiers wounded in IDF raid on Gaza flotilla 'in name of entire State of Israel'
Ronen Medzini
"Israel is going through a difficult time, and to my regret there is a structural majority against Israel in the UN," President Shimon Peres said Thursday during a visit to soldiers wounded in the IDF raid on the Gaza flotilla.
"It doesn't matter what we do – and of course this is not a majority of justice. There is no way of passing logical and positive resolutions regarding the Middle East with the Arab lobby in the UN," he said.
Peres paused near the bed of a moderately wounded soldier, and talked with two others wounded in the lethal raid that left nine activists dead.
"From the first day my heart was with Y.," the president said to the soldier's family. "I was deeply moved to speak to him and I know it's a miracle that today he can lie in bed and speak to me. He is the salt of the earth, and the entire State of Israel embraces him today."
Peres also thanked the soldiers' families. "I have the honor today of saluting you," he said, "and I thank you in the name of the State."
"You fought morally, and showed valor in your acts," he continued. "In the name of the State of Israel, I salute you and admire your courage and restraint even in the face of danger to your own lives."
"There were terrorists on the decks of the Marmara," the president said, echoing what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said Wednesday. "Israel will continue to extend a hand in peace and I will take advantage of my visit to once again call on Hamas – abandon the path of terror, recognize Israel, and return to the negotiating table immediately. Only in this way will you lift the blockade on Gaza."
"The last fight was a moral, not a military, battle," Peres said. "The State of Israel works with a sense of moral mission, and I am sure that the sense of justice was with you during the operation. You did not act as robots, you acted with discretion, you were heedful even as your own lives were in danger. The unit members did incredible things, both singly and as a unit. You put the nation first. I hear love and admiration for the unit and for the army from all sides."
The president also recalled that Israel had left Gaza of its own free will. "Immediately after this, without any reason, Hamas chose to fire missiles on innocent women and children in the State of Israel," he said.
The IDF spokesman's office issued footage on Thursday which may reveal the real intentions of some of the flotilla participants.
"When I first traveled, I wanted to be a real shaheed (martyr), but I was not lucky," one of the Marmara passengers long before he had even seen an IDF soldier. "The second time I also wanted to be a shaheed, but I was not lucky. The third time, Inshallah (god willing), I will be a shaheed."
Among the items found aboard the flotilla vessels were jackets bearing the Turkish flag, binoculars and masks for protection against smoke. The newly released videos show activists preparing for the battle, including cutting metal bars.

In the first interview since he was wounded in Monday's raid on the flotilla, Captain R, who commanded the troops who boarded the Marmara via helicopter, spoke of the battle that took place on vessel. According to R, hundreds of people who were on the boat took part in attacking him and his soldiers and they were forced to use weapons because of danger to their lives. R. was the soldier who was thrown from the deck, as shown in the footage distributed by the IDF. "I was in front of a number of people with knives and clubs. I cocked my weapon when I saw that one was coming towards me with a knife drawn and I fired once. Then another 20 people came at me from all directions and threw me down to the deck below."

Meanwhile, six soldiers are still hospitalized but their condition is improving. In addition, 33 foreign nationals who took part in the flotilla are also hospitalized. Most of the participants were from Turkey, and the rest from England, Australia, Indonesia and the Palestinian Authority.

Palestinian Zionist Organization is Founded
by Hillel Fendel
The latest Arab to show his public support for Israel is Elias Issa, who describes himself as a “European West-Bank Palestinian.” He writes that he chose a unique approach by which to celebrate Israel’s 62nd birthday – namely, by launching the Palestinian Zionist Organization. He says is goal is “to show the world why it must support the Jewish people and to [distance itself] from the terrorist Palestinian government.”
Statements on the new website include warnings that a new PA state, if it were to arise, would “become the most terrorist state in the world… The Palestinians don't believe in a two-state solution; they only believe in a one-state solution - a land called Palestine [which] does not involve any Jewishness."
Issa, who now lives in the United States, explains that the international community is blind “to what's truly going on in this Middle East conflict. [I hope] to make a difference by shining a different kind of light on the Palestinian-Israeli situation.”
The website notes that “more and more Palestinians” are going public in their support for Israel. Just last month, Mosab Hassan Yousef – the son of a Hamas founder and leader – published his autobiography, detailing how he spied for Israel for a decade, preventing dozens of suicide attacks and exposing numerous terrorist groups. He later converted to Christianity and moved to the U.S.
There is also Walid Shoebat, one of the more famous figures on this list. Shoebat was born in Bethlehem, the grandson of the Mukhtar of Beit Sahour. Shoebat joined the PLO in his youth, and was involved in attacks against Israel, and later moved to the U.S. After the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Shoebat became an active advocate against Islamism and a fervent supporter of the State of Israel, arguing that parallels exist between radical Islam and Nazism.
Speaking to Israel National Radio's Tovia Singer some years ago, Shoebat said, “I deeply wish to be granted forgiveness from the [IDF] soldier whom I almost killed… I would beg [him] to please understand that I underwent an educational occupation of hatred which brainwashed my mind to hate Jews. We were taught it since we were children and I did not know any better.”
Dr. Tawfik Hamid, once a member of an Islamic terror organization, took part in last year’s “Facing Tomorrow” conference in Jerusalem. He believes that the Jews have done their best, and that it’s now the Muslim world’s turn to make some changes and concessions… You [the Jewish People] are a great nation, and in the most difficult times, such as when the Nazis were putting you in ovens, you were able to get out of it and build a great country of human rights – and so, don’t let your country surrender to barbarism; fight for it and use every tactic you can use to stand against it… Never make concessions to radicals; the more concessions you make, the more they attack you.”
Another former terrorist, ex-Arafat aide and terrorist Taysir Saada, converted to Christianity and now heads Hope for Ishmael, an organization dedicated to reconciling Arabs and Jews.

Palestinian Zionist Organization is Born
By Ryan Jones / www.Israeltoday.co.il
Not all Palestinians hate Israel. In fact, a surprising number either have no problem with Israel at all or even love the Jewish state. Some of these brave Palestinians are coming out of the closet, rejecting the charges of their brethren that Israel is a repressive entity that has stolen their land. One Arab supporter of Israel, Elias Issa, went so far as to mark the nation’s 62nd Independence Day by launching the Palestinian Zionist Organization (PZO).
Like others before him, Issa says his view of Israel changed drastically when he came to faith in Yeshua (Jesus). “A few years ago I got to know Yeshua and He changed my life completely,” Issa told israel today. “Yeshua is the one who filled my heart with love for the Jewish people. He is the one who deserves all the glory for this testimony. Yeshua is the one who changes enemies [Arabs and Jews] into best friends!
All the testimonies of Palestinians who defend Israel publicly are proof that Yeshua is alive and that He is pure love.” Issa challenged the secular media’s suggestions that converted Muslims like himself, Son of Hamas author Mosab Hassan Yousef (see israel today, April 2010) and former PLO terrorist Walid Shoebat support Israel because they seek fame and fortune and because it is in vogue among Evangelical Christians. “These pro-Israel Arabs including myself must be mentally ill, or they must all be speaking the truth concerning the love of Yeshua that touched heir hearts so much that they would risk their lives to defend their people’s ‘biggest enemy,’” said Issa. “I know aYeshua who changes anti-Israel terrorists into pro-Israel Zionists.” On the PZO’s new website (www.palestinianzionistorganisation.com), Issa says his goal is to “show the world why it must support the Jewish people and distance itself from the terrorist Palestinian government.” He says that an independent Palestinian state would be nothing more than a haven for terrorism, not only against Israel, but also against the West. He insists that many Palestinians know this and privately agree with him.
“There are absolutely many more Palestinians who support Israel but choose not to go public because of fear,” he told us. “I know Palestinians who live behind the anti-terrorism wall in
Judea and Samaria [the so-called ‘West Bank’], and they hope that Israel enters Gaza and the other territories to take out all the terrorists. Many Palestinians in those territories support Israel completely. But if they go public with their stories, you do not want to know what Hamas and Fatah will do with them.” For their own safety, Issa, Yousef and Shoebat now reside in the US. And while living in America is no guarantee against violent repercussions, Issa is etermined to move forward with his message of love and support for Israel. I will go forth step by step so I can
manage the burden that comes with this decision to launch the Palestinian Zionist Organization,” he says. “I wait for the Lord to tell me what to do and when to do it, and I know that the Creator of
heaven and earth is my protection.”
Issa noted that since launching the PZO, several Palestinians who secretly support Israel have come forward to offer their thanks and backing for the new movement. The hope is that the more people like Issa make their voice heard, the more courage other Palestinians who don’t want to live under a terrorist regime will have to step forward. But, as Issa points out, that can only happen when more Palestinian hearts are opened to the God of Israel and His Messiah, Yeshua, and to the love that flows from Him: “The reason why I launched the Palestinian Zionist Organization is love, love of the God of Israel, love of Yeshua and love for the Jewish people.”

Haaretz exclusive: Hamas founder's son worked for Shin Bet for years | |
By Avi Issacharoff Source: www.Haaretz.com |
The son of a leading Hamas figure, who famously converted to Christianity, served for over a decade as the Shin Bet security service's most valuable source in the militant organization's leadership, Haaretz has learned.
Mosab Hassan Yousef is the son of Sheikh Hassan Yousef, a Hamas founder and one of its leaders in the West Bank. The intelligence he supplied Israel led to the exposure of a number of terrorist cells, and to the prevention of dozens of suicide bombings and assassination attempts on Israeli figures.
The exclusive story will appear in this Friday's Haaretz Magazine, and Yousef's memoir, "Son of Hamas" (written with Ron Brackin) will be released next week in the United States. Yousef, 32, became a devout Christian 10 years ago and now lives in California after fleeing the West Bank in 2007 and going public with his conversion.
Yousef was considered the Shin Bet's most reliable source in the Hamas leadership, earning himself the nickname "the Green Prince" - using the color of the Islamist group's flag, and "prince" because of his pedigree as the son of one of the movement's founders.
During the second intifada, intelligence Yousef supplied led to the arrests of a number of high-ranking Palestinian figures responsible for planning deadly suicide bombings. These included Ibrahim Hamid (a Hamas military commander in the West Bank, Marwan Barghouti (founder of the Fatah-linked Tanzim militia) and Abdullah Barghouti (a Hamas bomb-maker with no close relation to the Fatah figure). Yousef was also responsible for thwarting Israel's plan to assassinate his father.
"I wish I were in Gaza now," Yousef said by phone from California, "I would put on an army uniform and join Israel's special forces in order to liberate Gilad Shalit. If I were there, I could help. We wasted so many years with investigations and arrests to capture the very terrorists that they now want to release in return for Shalit. That must not be done."
The story of Yousef's spiritual transformation appeared in Haaretz Magazine in August 2008. Only now, however, is Yousef exposing the secret he kept since 1996, when he was first held by Shin Bet agents seeking to enlist him in infiltrating the upper echelon of Hamas.
Their efforts proved successful, and Yousef was released from prison in 1997. His former handler, who no longer serves with the security service, says Yousef collaborated with Israel because he wanted to save lives.
"So many people owe him their life and don't even know it," said the handler, named in Yousef's book as Captain Loai. "People who did a lot less were awarded the Israel Security Prize. He certainly deserves it."
Loai makes no secret of his admiration for his former source. "The amazing thing is that none of his actions were done for money," he says. "He did things he believed in. He wanted to save lives. His grasp of intelligence matters was just as good as ours - the ideas, the insights. One insight of his was worth 1,000 hours of thought by top experts."
Loai recalled one time when the Shin Bet received information that a suicide bomber was going to be picked up at Manara Square in Ramallah and be given an explosives belt.
"We didn't know his name or what he looked like - only that he was in his 20s and would be wearing a red shirt," he said. "We sent the Green Prince to the square and with his acute sense, he located the target within minutes. He saw who picked him up, followed the car and made it possible for us to arrest the suicide bomber and the man who was supposed to give him the belt. So another attack was thwarted, though no one knows about it. No one opens Champagne bottles or bursts into song and dance. This was an almost daily thing for the Prince. He displayed courage, had sharp antennae and an ability to cope with danger. We knew he was one of those who in any situation - rain, snow, summer - give their all."
With his memoir, Yousef hopes to send a message of peace to Israelis. Still, he admits he is pessimistic over the prospect of Israel signing a peace agreement with the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, let alone Hamas.
"Hamas cannot make peace with the Israelis. That is against what their God tells them. It is impossible to make peace with infidels, only a cease-fire, and no one knows that better than I. The Hamas leadership is responsible for the killing of Palestinians, not Israelis," he said. "Palestinians! They do not hesitate to massacre people in a mosque or to throw people from the 15th or 17th floor of a building, as they did during the coup in Gaza. The Israelis would never do such things. I tell you with certainty that the Israelis care about the Palestinians far more than the Hamas or Fatah leadership does."
